When to travel to India (and why it always depends)

When to travel to India (and why it always depends)

This is the question I get all the time. And honestly… I never give just one answer.
Because India isn’t a place where you check the weather once and you’re done. It’s huge. It shifts constantly. Different climates, different rhythms, depending on where you are. So instead of telling you “this is the best time to travel to India”, I’d rather say: it depends on what you’re looking for.

But let’s make it simple.

October to March: the best time to travel to India (overall)

If you google “when to travel to India”, this is what comes up. And for once… it’s actually true.

The monsoon has just passed, the air feels clearer, everything is still a bit green, and the heat becomes manageable again.

This is a great time for:

Rajasthan
North India (Delhi, Agra, Varanasi…)
Most of the south as well
Days are pleasant, and mornings can even feel a bit chilly in the north.

It’s also a lively time. Festivals, weddings, people everywhere.

If it’s your first time in India, this is probably when I’d take you.

April to June: the heat (the real one) Things shift around April.

And by May/June… it gets intense.

40°C+ in parts of North India. The kind of heat that slows everything down. Or stops you completely. So no, it’s not the easiest time to travel, but it’s not a bad one either.

It works if:

you want fewer tourists
you’re okay taking things slow
you handle heat well

And it’s actually a great time to head to the mountains: Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand... That’s where you breathe again.

July to September: monsoon season in India

Now this one… you either avoid it or you fall in love with it.

Monsoon in India isn’t just “rain”. It’s a whole atmosphere. Heavy showers, soft rain, unpredictable days. Everything turns deep green, the pace changes.

Some places get complicated (transport, humidity, flooding), but others become incredibly beautiful.

For example:

Kerala
parts of South India
Goa (completely different vibe than high season)

It’s a slower India. Less postcard, more feeling.

June to September: when to travel to Ladakh

And then, plot twist.

While most of India is under the rain, Ladakh opens up. High-altitude desert, tucked in the Himalayas. So the monsoon doesn’t really reach it.

Which means:

blue skies
raw, almost unreal landscapes
monasteries lost in the mountains

This is the best (and almost only) time to travel to Ladakh.

But it’s not a “casual” trip: altitude, time to adapt, physical impact... It’s powerful. Not just beautiful.

When to travel to India by region

If you want something simple:

Rajasthan / North India → October to March
Kerala / South India → December to March (or monsoon for a different experience)
Ladakh → June to September
Mountains (Himachal, Uttarakhand) → April to June

And Northeast India (the Seven Sisters)?

It’s not talked about much, but these regions show a completely different side of India.

The Northeast — Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim (a bit apart), Nagaland… — is greener, wilder, more mountainous, with many tribal communities. And climate-wise, it’s its own thing too. In general, the best time to travel there is from October to April, but again, it depends on the exact region.

Meghalaya is incredibly lush, known for its dense nature, waterfalls and almost unreal landscapes. It’s one of the wettest places on earth, but because the land sits a bit higher, it doesn’t really face flooding during monsoon. The waterfalls become massive, everything turns intensely green. April tends to be the driest month.

Sikkim follows a more Himalayan rhythm. March to June and October to December are the best times to go. Winter gets colder, and yes, it can snow (in India, yes). It’s a region that feels quite apart — quieter, deeply rooted in Buddhist culture, and with a kind of warmth and hospitality that really stays with you.

So… when is the best time to go to India?

Honestly?

October to March if you want something smooth and easy to navigate. But that’s a bit of a safe answer. Every season in India has something to offer. It’s just not the same experience.

Can you travel to India during monsoon?

Yes.

You just have to let go of control a little. And weirdly, that’s often when things get interesting. You will discover luxurious nature, less crowd, and very special feeling.

So in the end, no matter the month, there’s always a part of India worth traveling to.
And sometimes, being “limited” by a certain time of year actually leads you to places you wouldn’t have considered… and that’s often how you end up discovering quieter, more hidden corners of this beautiful country.
